Town Building Pad for UMC Chopper - 04:10 PM - February , 2006
Pelahatchie is building a landing pad for the AirCare helicopter from the University of MS Medical Center in Jackson. The pad will be a designated place for an ambulance to transfer patients to the chopper, saving a 30-mile drive to Jackson or a 10-mile drive to the landing pad at Scott Regional Hospital in Morton.
The pad will be located on the west side of town near the ball fields in the industrial park. The area was chosen because it is well-lit and open. "The few hundred dollars the town will spend on pouring the pad is a good investment to provide air service to the area," said Mayor Knox Ross.
"It's good forward-thinking," said Linda Brewer, a nurse practitioner with Scott Regional Clinic in Pelahatchie. "The area will see a lot of growth in the future." Brewer said the chopper is called in to transport victims of industrial accidents, those with emergency medical conditions, and people hurt in accidents on I-20 and curvy rural roads. Three major routes, I-20, U.S. 80, and MS 43, run through Pelahatchie.
"We have to have a way to get people out of here quickly," said Philip Allan, emergency services coordinator for the town of 1,500. Allan said the helicopter would be especially useful in the event of an accident in which rescue workers would have to take a long time to pull a victim from a crumpled vehicle. While the extricaiton took place, the helicopter could arrive and be waiting at the landing pad to speed them to the Jackson hospital.
Donna Norris, chief flight nurse at UMC, said the Pelahatchie pad is part of an effort to identify landing spots in rural areas to assist ground transports. Norris said the AirCare at UMC unit averages 70 flights a month all over the state.
