Muscadine Jubilee Set for Sept.9 - 04:05 PM - August , 2006

Pelahatchie’s Muscadine Jubilee will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Muscadine Park. Admission is $2 and children under 6 are admitted free.

“It is family entertainment in a family atmosphere,” Mayor Knox Ross said. “It is held in a park in our downtown area and you can bring your kids. You won’t worry about them running off or getting into trouble.”

The Jubilee was organized more than 20 years ago to promote the spirit of Pelahatchie and centers around family-oriented activities. Formerly know as “Our Town Day,” it has grown from a simple event featuring local musicians and artists to a festival attracting people from all over the country.

City Clerk Bettye Massey has been involved with organizing the festival since its early beginnings. “We never dreamed it would get this big,” Massey said. “We used to have a stage on the back of an old truck that was used to haul chickens. Now we are attracting national entertainment.

Country singer John Anderson will highlight the entertainment, which will also include a variety of gospel, country, and blues artists.

Along with the entertainment, arts and crafts booths will be set up throughout the park. “When this thing first started, there were only two booths,” Massey said. “We have 15 booths now, and we can have more.” Massey said about 20 booths are still available and can be reserved. Food booths cost about $125, including electricity. Arts and crafts booths cost about $30.

There were about 3,000 visitors at last year’s festival, but Massey said the turnout was good considering it was near the time Hurricane Katrina hit the area. “We anticipate more this year,” Massey said. “It has been successful every year and there is good entertainment this year.”

One of the most popular events at the Jubilee is the Grape Stomp. “It’s funny to watch,” Mayor Ross said. Several participants, including public officials, law enforcement officers, and radio personalities, will stomp on individual bowls of muscadine. After a set amount of time, the juice from the stomped grapes will be measured to see who stomped out the most. The winner will receive a silver wine cooler.

“This is something I look forward to all year,” said Loraine Lantrip of Pelahatchie, who has missed the festival only once in 26 years. “I may be 71 years old, but I feel like I am 16.”

For more information on reserving a booth, call the Pelahatchie City Hall at (601) 854-5224. There is no deadline for reserving booths.
